The table on the next page shows how the course-taking pattern in mathematics and science has changed since 1982.
The most rigorous advanced placement mathematics curriculum includes such courses as trigonometry, calculus, and calculus/analytic geometry (Advanced Levels II and III). The percentage of high school graduates who achieved these levels went up between 1982 and 1998 from 4.8% and 5.9% to 14.4% and 11.8%. The percentage of students taking any advanced mathematics increased from 26.2% to 41.4%. Students who elect the rigorous curricula are those who are most likely to go to college, and to succeed. These students expect their hard work to pay off with the best jobs and higher income. (Some say that these students may be overeducated. See: "Are We Too Educated for the Future Job Market?" in Work & Leisure, Chapter 3.)

What about hedging one's bets - preparing for life after high school by electing both a vocational education concentration and a college preparatory curriculum? There is a small but growing trend in that direction. We explore the topic in the next panel.
