Incidence (Per 100,000 Population) of Diagnosed Infections for Pathogens by Year and Pathogen

NR Not reported. Data are from the Foodborne Diseases Active Surveillance Network for the five original sites from 1996-2000 and for all eight sites in 2000. The Foodborne Diseases Active Surveillance Network (FoodNet) is the principal foodborne disease component of CDC' s Emerging Infections Program (EIP). FoodNet is a collaborative project of the CDC, nine EIP sites (California, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, New York, Maryland, Minnesota, Oregon and Tennessee), the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The project consists of active surveil- lance for foodborne diseases and related epidemiologic studies designed to help public health officials better understand the epidemiology of foodborne diseases in the United States. The project began in five states and surveilled laboratory-confirmed cases. Each year the surveillance area, referred to as the catchment, expands. By 2002 it covered 38 million persons in nine states.

Urine isolates excluded because urine isolates were not reported before 1999. 2. Rates from 1997-2000 for Cyclospora and Cryptosporidium were calculated using the 1997 catchment area. Connecticut, Minnesota, and selected counties in California began data collection at the beginning of 1997; Oregon and other selected counties in California began this process in the middle of the year. Only full-year data are included in these rate calculations.
