Sexuality - Americans And Their Sexual Behavior

We've seen some statistics on sexual activity of Americans. But what are they really doing behind closed doors? What would they like to do?

Tracking such behavior, of course, is quite difficult. People may not always admit their sexual behavior and interests out of fear of being labeled too far out of the ever-shifting norm. One recent survey, conducted by Durex (the condom maker) and Euro RSCG Worldwide, potentially sheds some light on what has been happening in the dark.

Some of the data is not too surprising: 80% of the respondents confessed to having had sex in a car. As quickly as cars appeared in our nation's garages in the 1950s, America's teenage males were borrowing the keys from Dad and driving their girlfriends out to "Lookout Point" (or some other spot to park). Fifty-seven percent claimed to have had a one night stand; again, hardly surprising information in light of the rise of casual sex and easier access to contraception.

Other data will trouble some a little more. More than half have had sex with a married person (5% would like to!); 28% have had an extramarital affair (4% would like to!). With computers finding their way into more homes, 23% confess to having "cybersex" on the Internet. For all the pleasures of this new technology, it's putting Americans on a slippery moral slope. Is cybersex cheating?

What interests Americans sexually? Americans would like to try sex on a plane or a train (having already done so in a car, of course). They would also like to try sex with multiple partners. The third most popular activity was to have sex at the office. Amazingly, 23% of the respondents actually have done so (for, um, information on America's productivity standards, see this series companion volume Work & Leisure — actually, productivity is way up!).

Now, for some questions: People want to have sex on train or a plane. Why are boats not on the list? If a pilot has sex on a plane, is he also having sex at the office? If I have cybersex at an Internet café, am I also having sex in a public place?
